FAQ
-
Can I create a tree on any subject?
Sure! Just remember to keep it semantic: your categories should represent topics or concepts (Politics, Vegetarian).
-
What is a training classifier?
Training classifiers are RSS feeds or webpages that are used to train your categories. Meaningtool supports all types of syndicated content (RSS, ATOM, etc.) and also websites such as Wikipedia articles.
-
Can I add any web page as a classifier?
Meaningtool can process websites where the relevant text is clearly accessible: Wikipedia is a great example. Sites filled with images, flash and/or ads are not.
-
What is a stop-word?
A stop-word is a word that doesn't add any relevant information to the analysis of the text and hence needs to be filtered. Stop-words are usually prepositions (in, at, from, etc.), adverbs (slowly, meanwhile), time references (yesterday, today) and pronouns (he, she, etc.). Be careful when adding new stop-words: take into account that a stop-word acts in the context of the tree, so a term that appears to be meaningless in one category can be crucial on another. Measure your choices on a large scale.
-
How do I add a stop-word?
You can add stop-words in two ways: from the Category Manager, select the word (or words) from the Relevant Terms and press "add as stop-word"; from the Stop-words section in the Category Manager, click "add" and type the word. You can add multiple stop-words separated by commas: "he, she, it".
-
When adding training classifiers: is the more the better?
Not really, always try to keep your trees simple. Use few but effective feeds or websites, this will speed up your categorizations and provide better results in the analysis.
-
Can I move categories or classifiers between trees?
No, this feature is not available yet.
-
Can I move classifiers from one category to another?
Yes, you can. From the Category Manager, choose a category, then select the feed by checking the box and press the button "Move". A pop-up window will show you the list of categories in the tree, select the desired category and press Move. You can move multiple classifiers by checking many boxes.
-
When I run a categorization, the results are filled with prepositions, adverbs and pronouns, what's up?
It seems like you forgot to import the stopwords for the given language. From the Category Manager, head to the Stop-words section, choose the language you are working with and click "Import".
-
Some of the relevant terms for a given category are wrong, how do I solve this?
First, always check your training classifiers: are they right for this category? If so, all you have to do is start 'pruning' your tree: add the words that don't semantically define your category as 'Stop-Words' and they won't appear again, but be careful because your choices apply to the entire tree.
-
I deleted a category tree, can I retrieve it?
No, so be careful!
-
After categorizing a page, how do I check the relevant terms and categories that matched it?
From the Play section, click the option 'More details' that can be seen below the categorization results. Here you can check the terms that defined the article, their relative weight in the analysis and the classifiers they came from. Use this feature to monitor your classifiers and prune your tree by deleting the ones that don't add meaning to the category.
